Highveld Association for the Physically Disabled (HAPD)
About
OUR HISTORY
This project was started in 1945 by 3 mothers of children with disabilities on Wednesday
mornings in their homes to assist each other where no service for their disabled children
was available at that stage.
In 1948, these parents grew to 7 parents with their children with different types of
Disabilities whom then arranged a meeting with the SAVF (Suid Afrikaane Vroue
Vereniging) in Pretoria and a Social worker. The organisation was registered under the
name of Cripple Care Association.
In 1976 the Workshop for people with disabilities was established in collaboration with
the Witbank Municipality who made a portion of the old Library near to General Hertzog
High School available for handwork in the morning from Monday to Friday. Here
voluntary workers were involved and handwork created for their own use and or to sell
to the community. This activity in the same building continued until the Community
Building was finished and the project could move to their new building suitable for all
types of disabilities.
The project was registered in 1989 as a NPO with its own NPO no. The Community Centre was called The Round Table Community Centre under leadership of the Rotary and the Round Table 57. The building was built on the land belonging to Highveld Steel and Vanadium. The building was built with building material and labour sponsored by the community of Witbank. There was a lease agreement of 99 years, but when Highveld Steel experienced financial difficulties they sold all their land of which this property was a part of.
In 2017, end of November, we had to move out and the only place to go was to the HAPD smallholding bought by Lotto in 2005, measuring at 1,5674 hectares. The HAPD registered address is Portion 16 (A portion of portion 9) of the farm Kromdraai 292 , Registration division J.S., Province of Mpumalanga.
This space was not enough to render services to all our persons with disabilities (pwd) and we changed our 4x garage building into a centre.
